Comparatives and Superlatives

This is a great lesson plan as a prelude to a compare/contrast project. I like teaching superlatives and comparatives because they are a somewhat “simple” grammar concept for students to grasp onto. There are only a few “exceptions” to the rule – like fun! I teach how to use fun as a comparative and tell students that if they listen, they will hear native speakers use funner all the time and this is their opportunity to try to correct a native speaker. This activity finds comparatives and superlatives in songs (and you can add in videos or books as superlatives are everywhere).

Also, I have included my follow-up to teaching superlatives and this is the debate! Debates are an exciting opportunity for students to let their voice be heard about issues that matter to them. I let my students choose the topics, so they can be fully investing in the argument. More than once, class was held overtime due to debates. Students can’t let go of “why they were right” and want to continue after the timer has stopped.
