Blind Peer Review

This is a peer review I adapted from Megan Riedel (English) at Yuba College. This peer review is completely anonymous and allows the students to receive multiple sources of feedback. It may take an entire class period depending on the amount of students (performed with a class of 20 or more).

Directions:

  1. Have the students write an essay (I usually do an in-class then examine it return it with a grade. I withhold the feedback).
  2. Return essays and have the students type up their essay without any corrections except for spelling and formatting.
  3. Students will print out two copies of their essay with only their ID numbers.
  4. Students will come to class and prepare for the peer review. Put them in pairs. This activity must be pairs due to the number of essays copied.
  5. Pass out the peer review and mix up the essays. Make sure that no student receives their essay.
  6. Once the essays are distributed have the pairs read, mark, and comment on only the introduction (10-20 minutes).
  7. Redistribute the essays (make sure to not give the same students the same essays or their own. Have the students examine the body of the essay. This usually takes additional time due to length (20-30 minutes).
  8. Redistribute the essays again and have them examine the conclusion (10-20 minutes).
  9. Return essays with the feedback forms to the students.

*Note: If students finish any section early, you may switch them with another group that has finished. This activity was originally intended for intermediate or advanced level essays.
