This is an activity I use with my beginning ESL students (ESL 215, Level 1). It is used with World English Intro, Unit 5: Daily Activities. We work with a limited number of adverbs: always, often/usually, sometimes, never. This activity takes place after teaching the students the adverbs in a prior lesson (World English Intro, pp. 60-61).
For the first box, advise students to fill in their cell phone numbers (I always tell them no one else will see this, if they want to use their actual information).
After that, elicit instructions that might commonly be left for a babysitter. I start out by asking questions such as: “What time does your child eat lunch? A snack?” Students will give a time and I elicit an adverb of frequency with questions such as: “Does your child eat lunch at 12:00 p.m. every day?” Then, demonstrate using an adverb of frequency in a sentence as instructions for the babysitter: “Atish always eats lunch at 12:00 p.m.” Do the same for a few other items to cover different adverbs of frequency, such as “Atish usually goes to bed at 8:30 p.m.” Once the students understand how to do the activity, go around the room and guide them individually as they write their own instructions.
Towards the end of the activity, advise students that the “911” section should be filled out with their address. This gives further practice for another Level 1 objective, which is to be able to write their address.
