Adapted from Patrick Hoggan at American River College, I created a peer review that is completely anonymous and competitive. In this peer review students will write the best essay possible and compete with other students. I usually include prizes for the winners (top 3). This can be done with paragraphs, essays, or any type of writing.
Directions:
- Have students write an essay then type that essay (I usually do an in-class essay that I will review and mark up for correction).
- Students will bring two typed copies of an essay to class. They must only have their ID number on their paper.
- Students will form groups of four. These groups of 4 will have 4 essays. The groups will split into sub groups of 2.
- Each sub group will examine two essays and decide which of the two is better.
- The sub group A/B will choose and hand it to the other sub group.
- They will discuss which essay is best between the two chosen essays.
- Professor will note which one is chosen.
- Students will repeat this process until there is 3 essays that would chosen twice.
- Professor will examine the essays as a class and be judge of the best essay.
- Award prizes if desired (I buy a few items and let the winner have first pick, 2nd place second pick, third place the last award)
Ideas for prizes: edible items, school materials/supplies, or textbooks/dictionaries.
