I recently noticed that a few videos from the World English Intro could be used at higher levels for discussion. During my level 3 course I have students read, “What is Ellis Island?” Students encounter a chapter on child labor. I have them watch a video from World English Intro and ask them whether this situation is right or wrong?
This video could also be used in a video talking about cultural differences and problems in other countries.
In the video a child named Manat wants to become a Thai boxer. His family and him made the decision to live a life dedicated to boxing. At the camp, he receives free training. The camp’s owner Andy has his reasons on why he is helping Manat.
- Talk about child labor: What situations is this acceptable? What is the minimum age in the US? In your country?
- Watch the video.
- Discuss why this is right or wrong? Good or bad?
