In level 3 integrated skills I have encouraged and implemented simple articles for students to use for their essays. Students must mention the article once in their essays. This is an attempt to bridge the gap and help students transition easier into using articles.

Directions:

1. Examine multiple articles with students on various topics. Articles can be found on Newsela.com.
2. Have students write down their opinions then share with the class about topic/prompt.
3. Introduce the article.
4. Show students format of the essay (see below *example*)
5. Have students write the 4 part essay.

Example Assignment:

Read the article “Article 2”

Prompt: Should high school require personal finance classes?

(sentences)

Introduction: about the topic (5-10)

Body Paragraph 1: Reason 1 — should or shouldn’t (5-10)

Body Paragraph 2: Reason 2 — should or shouldn’t (5-10)

Conclusion: Final Thought (1-2)
