The attached is a syllabus for an English for Employment course for intermediate students and above. The course entails career exploration by examining interests and skills and related career fields and academic requirements. The as American education system as well as the Yuba College general education requirements leading to an associates degree, certificate and/or transfer are also covered. See syllabus: << 259SyllabiS2018 – SAMPLE SYLLABUS >>
As the syllabus shows, we also explore reading job ads, resumes, cover letters, and some interviewing skills. The course final project is the creation of a personal “Job Searching” portfolio in which each student has created all documents related to searching and applying for a job, the related resume and cover letter, and gathering of documents such as transcripts, work permits and other document they will need to gain employment. The students actually apply for a short-term job online to go through the process and use the documents they have created in class to upload as well as print out the application they complete as a model.
I generally have speakers come to class. Recently I have asked a career counselor and financial aid reprensentative to speak. Also, we had Panda Morgan come speak about setting up a small business in California. Her services are free and students rated this speaker very high.

This is a three-unit course and generally students should be intermediate and above and have sufficient computer skills to prepare the job-searching documents.
